Stannis confesses to killing Renly with blood magic, and Brienne executes him, telling Stannis she is killing him in the name of the 'rightful' King Renly. After Melisandre burns Alester Florent as a sacrifice to R'hllor to ensure favorable winds, Stannis takes most of his remaining army and sails north to the Wall to relieve the Wildlings' threat on Castle Black. Stannis' sudden arrival at the Wall catches Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-the-Wall, by surprise, and his cavalry routs the whole Wildling host with few casualties.

Stannis declares himself the one true King; however, most of the Baratheon bannermen support the claim of his younger and more charismatic brother Renly, as does the powerful House Tyrell due to Renly's marriage to Margaery Tyrell. Stannis tries to negotiate with Renly, offering him the chance to become his heir, which Renly rejects, planning to use his superior numbers to destroy Stannis' army the next day. However, Renly is unexpectedly assassinated by a living shadow conjured by Melisandre using Stannis' life force. After his death, many of Renly's bannermen immediately swear allegiance to Stannis, although the Tyrells side with the Lannisters due to their offer to have Margaery marry Joffrey.

For fourteen years, Stannis would wait patiently for his promised bride, all the while maintaining a cordial relationship with his brothers and in particular Varys the Spider, a man he detested but nevertheless knew he needed. During this time, Stannis' hold on Dragonstone was threatened by his own Westerosi Valyrian vassals on three separate occasions, twice in a bid to supplant him with the Beggar King Viserys, and once in the name of Daenarys herself. All three rebellions were crushed brutally with the help of Davos Seaworth, Stannis' most loyal supporter.

In the TV series, there is no indication that Stannis knows about the situation before Eddard sends him a letter about it. At the time the books begin, Stannis has taken an indefinite leave of absence to visit his wife and daughter on Dragonstone. He is married to Lady Selyse of House Florent and has a single daughter, Shireen (they have no sons, alive or stillborn). Davos, knighted by Stannis for his role in the siege, is arguably Stannis's most loyal and steadfast vassal. During the rebellion, Stannis held the ancestral Baratheon castle of Storm's End against a siege by House Tyrell for over a year, which included the whole power of the Reach and the Redwyne fleet. By the end of the siege, the castle defenders were living on rats and boot leathers and facing starvation, when they were saved by the smuggler Davos, who snuck in his cargo of onions and salted fish past the Redwyne blockade.
For Viserys, the loss of his sister to the brother of the usurper Robert proved to be his undoing. Driven mad by grief and rage, he launched a final coup for his claim to the Iron Throne. His pitiful attempt, not recorded in any history, ended in his capture by King Robert. Viserys' life was miraculously spared, however he would spend the rest of his days in the Night's Watch as a builder. Later in life he rose in rebellion against King Aegon V, outraged that Prince Duncan had broken his marriage contract to his daughter.
House Baratheon was founded by Orys Baratheon, a general in the army of King Aegon I Targaryen, the Conqueror. He defeated Argilac the Arrogant, the last of the Storm Kings, and captured his castle of Storm's End. House Baratheon, allied to the Houses Stark, Arryn and Tully, defeated the Targaryen army at the Battle of the Trident, whilst the forces of House Lannister captured King's Landing, where Jaime Lannister slew the Mad King. It was decided that Robert, as the military leader of the rebellion and also the one with the best blood-claim to the Iron Throne, would become King. With Lyanna dead, he married Cersei Lannister to cement the alliance that brought down the Targaryens.
We don't know if we're nervous or excited, but we expect the scene to test the tolerance of many fans. Might it even go too far, even for a show set in the Game of Thrones universe? Brother will fight brother, friend will fight friend, dragon will fight dragon and fans will fight back tears and screams in the upcoming second season of House of the Dragon. Stannis' armies were ultimately crushed, but the war had inspired other opportunists, and it was known even then that the Martells of Dorne and the Tyrells of the Reach were plotting their own independence. This drove Robert to make a hasty White Peace with Stannis, one which miraculously spared Dragonstone from lasting damage and spared the life of Stannis' young queen.
